Day 27 - Kingman, Arizona - Grand Canyon

We had a really lovely, leisurely start to our day. We woke early because of the 3 hour time difference and went for a 45 min walk around Kingman. What an interesting place. It is really desert-like and lots of old unkempt homes with the odd nice one here and there.

First views of Kingman in the morning

...and the streets around Kingman

This is another little cottage

We were amazed at the sparse landscape

We came back to the Motel (which was lovely) and had a yummy hot breakfast - which was included in the cost of $67US!!.

Where we stayed

All about Route 66

We then headed on our way (via yet more shopping at Walmart in Kingman!). It was an interesting journey through amazing countryside - even snow capped mountains in the distance.

On the road .... again!
Where we had stayed at Kingman was on the historic Route 66 - it was a fun place and we stopped back on Route 66 for lunch (actually managed to get a yummy sandwich for lunch .... that doesn't happen easily here!)...they really played out the Route 66 theme in the place we stopped.

We came through 'Williams' which was a small and quirky town - then we were on the actual road to the Canyon.

...and again!
We arrived at the Canyon at about 3.30pm and were able to see awesome glimpses. I was SO excited as we approached - the anticipation was right up there let me tell you. Some days I can't believe we're really living this wonderful adventure.

We struggled to get accommodation - there was barely a room in the whole park (which is HUGE) - but we were blessed with a great room in the end. We brought our stuff in and headed straight out for a look around.

There is SO much to see and do. We decided to do the sunset trip. We caught the shuttle out to the recommended point and waited for the incredible spectacular sight of sunset and it was worth waiting for!

Our FIRST view of the canyon

We then walked back (some 3.5kms very fast) it was getting very dark - so we really high-tailed it - wouldn't want to take a wrong turn or step on the edge of the canyon in the dark let me tell you!

We then came back to Bright Angel Lodge ...

where we booked in for dinner and headed to the cocktail bar where we enjoyed a drink and a chat in a really cozy atmosphere.

Dinner was nice - very big again! - then we headed of for an early night - ready for an early rise for the sunrise tour!
